Water Baptism According to the Bible
When people believed on the Lord Jesus Christ in the New Testament they were baptized.
Acts 2:41
41 Then they that gladly received his word were baptized: and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls.
Acts 8:12
12 But when they believed Philip preaching the things concerning the kingdom of God, and the name of Jesus Christ, they were baptized, both men and women.
Acts 8:35-36
35 Then Philip opened his mouth, and began at the same scripture, and preached unto him Jesus.
36 And as they went on their way, they came unto a certain water: and the eunuch said, See, here is water; what doth hinder me to be baptized?
We are saved by Grace through Faith (Eph. 2:8). Through faith in God’s Word we repent, by grace God forgives. Through faith in God’s word we are baptized, and by God’s grace our sins are remitted. Through faith we ask for the Holy Spirit and by Grace God gives us His most wonderful gift.
Notice the words of our Lord Jesus concerning baptism in Mark 16:16:
16 He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned.
Notice that Jesus did not say, “He that believeth and is saved shall be baptized...” He said, “He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved...”
By so saying our Lord Jesus was placing great importance upon believing and baptism.
Water baptism is a burial (Rom. 6:4) and therefore is to be done by immersion. Jesus himself was baptized by immersion in the River Jordan (Matt. 3:16).
The Bible says that baptism is for the remission of sins (Acts 2:38; 22:16).
Baptism is to be administered in the name of Jesus Christ (Acts 2:38; 4:12; 8:16; 10:44-48; 19:1-6; 22:16; Col. 3:17).
The Bible asks this question:
Acts 22:16
16 And now why tarriest thou? arise, and be baptized, and wash away thy sins, calling on the name of the Lord.
